David Frum on Bill Clinton

David Frum would like to hear what Bill Clinton would have said at Ronald Reagan's funeral. Nice sentiments, but I disagree. Clinton may have made kind remarks at Nixon's funeral, but that was before all semblance of political civility came to an end in 2000. The Reagan family is justified in not giving any opportunity for this to turn into another political rally like the egregious example set in Minnesota at Paul Wellstone's funeral.

I think former President Clinton would have very respectful words for former President Reagan. I agree that the Reagan family is completely justified in picking whom they want to speak at the funeral, but I think its outlandish to say that Clinton would speak in some way that was not respectful or admiring of Reagan. Clinton carries himself more like Reagan in the way he conducts himself in public (both during and after his Presidency) than does either of the Bush Presidents. To think otherwise is to be blinded by a falsely painted picture of former President Clinton.

I think that this whole Reagan thing has been drawn out to long.
I have very much Love and compassion for the Reagans ...But my goodness.I'm a democrat and I loved the Reagans too.
I think that this has also been a media play for the Bush campaign.Bill Clinton would have out shined Bush if he would have spoke and that is what we should have had someone that could speak plain talk for all the democrats that love Reagan.I think no matter who was calling the shots that all of the Pres, living should have spoke.
TO SAD REAGAN WOULD HAVE NOT LIKED WHAT HAPPEN

Apparently you've bought into the big Limbaugh Lie about the Wellstone memorial. One paragraph of one speaker's eulogy was about winning the election for Paul--and this was out of a four-hour service.

There were no Republicans shouted down when they tried to speak. There was no pre-scripted involvment by the DNC of DSCC. There was, in fact, only one elected Democrat (Senator Tom Harkin) who spoke, and his exhortations to the crowd about continuing a legacy of peace, justice, and equality can hardly be called partisan or political.

The families have made video of the service available here:
http://shows.implex.tv/wellstone/

Please tell me if I'm wrong after you've had a chance to watch the whole thing.

Jake, Johnetta, you may very well be right that Clinton should have been spoken, though Jake, I do not agree with you that Clinton has carried himself better than either of the Bush presidents, nor do I agree with your opinion that I am blinded by a falsely painted picture of Clinton.

Folkbum, I looked up the URL for the video, and while I might learn something from it, please pardon my skepticism that a video produced by a sympathetic party would produce a complete picture of everything that happened there. I doubt, for instance, that it would show Jesse Ventura walking out of the event in disgust. I also note that "partisan" is in the eye of the beholder, and is a meaningless word. And I didn't hear about the Wellstone memorial from Limbaugh.

Think you all should get over it. Clinton doesn't need to be a baby about it. If you ever planned a funeral-You would know you do things the way the family wants them not the way outsiders think it should be.

Joel - the Bush family may take more of their politics from Reagan, but Clinton's way of interacting with people and speaking in public was more along the lines of Reagan. In person, people loved Clinton because he was so laid back and friendly, as they did sith Reagan. Its not been that way with the Bush's. Yes, we can differ in our opinions, but neither Bush is as magnetic as Reagan or Clinton.
