The Religious Vote, Voting Guides and other comments

The Institute for Religion and Democracy has three informative links on their site.

Steve Rempe and Alan Wisdom critique the voting guides put out by several denominations.

Diane Knippers talks about how God isn't a Democrat or Republican, and criticizes those who use that statement to marginalize their opponents. For my part, I have never claimed that one must be a conservative to be a Christian. The original motivation for this weblog, originally called "Religious Left Watch" was to criticize those who claim the opposite, that one cannot be a Christian (or "faithful") and a conservative.

And finally, an article by Mark Tooley describing a last-minute rally for the "religious left", conducted from the National Cathedral in Washington DC.

Joel,

I don't consider myself a materialist, but neither do I share your anti-gay values. (Your comment button on the above posts isn't working, so I'm posting here.) In Oklahoma, the Republican platform provides that gays shouldn't be school teachers at any grade level, including high school.

Your analysis is so superficial and shallow that I'm tempted not to respond. Many, many faithful people voted for Kerry. That is, unless you believe that 85% of blacks, 56% of Hispanics and 76% of Jews are materialists. As well, 25% of born-again Christians voted for Kerry.

One thing I predict is that those of us who are both Christians and liberals will take a much more active role in future campaigns. I don't think we can match the Christian coalition, but I think we could make a difference.

A lot of us Christians believe that Bush rushed to war and that he believes that God has designated the United States as the new Biblical "Israel."

While there has been a lot of political nastiness from Democrats in the blue states, Republicans have more than matched such nastiness in the red states.

George Bush should be congratulated on a splendid victory. However, there is also such a thing as grace and humility in victory and you display precious little of that.

Joel, I think you're trying to comment on the posts above, and those comments are by my co-author, Rick Penner. I'm going to open those, so you can repost the comment where you want it to appear.

Joel,

Sorry, I should have read more carefully.
